RC21 CONFERENCE 2013
Resourceful cities
Berlin (Germany), 29-31 August 2013
Humboldt-University Berlin, Institute for Social Science, Dept. for Urban and Regional Sociology
Global and local real estate players and their role in the transformation of large cities and metropolitan areas in Europe.
As the site of relevant investment by private and public actors, large cities and metropolitan areas are impacted by the increasing role of global real estate players. Substantial financial resources, technical and financial expertise, access to global architectural firms and the archistar system are the assets deployed by these new actors.
This session calls for research on the impact of these new actors on governance. Papers should address the following questions:
How do they influence processes of physical transformation of the city?
How do they interact with regulatory systems at different levels?
To which degree do the resources they control enable them to siphon off gains from the real estate market?
We welcome also papers addressing the development of the financial/real estate complex at national and local levels, its impact in the bargaining process and its influence on the actual selection, configuration and implementation of specific projects.
