Different forms of cooperative approaches to urban development between state, private sector and civil society actors have established themselves in recent years. By investigating these new forms of urban governance we hope to establish to what extent cooperative approaches are important drivers of urban development and to what extent the results differ depending on the constellation of actors involved. The academic and public discussion focuses on the (im)balance of commercial versus civil society interests during the development and in the spatial results. In order to verify this, this session will examine different forms of cooperative approaches to urban development and analyse their consequences.
The aim of the session is to convey what differences exist between different cooperation forms regarding the interdependence between actors as well as the uses of different cooperation forms, particularly in terms of their desired and final effects on urban development. Therefore questions regarding actor constellations and their interests, the in- or exclusion of civil society actors as well as the inclusionary or exclusionary spatial results of cooperative urban development will be raised in order to gain a deeper understanding of the workings of new and different forms of urban governance. Presentations should focus on one or more of the following aspects:
(1) planning and selection of development sites; 2) development goals (3) the implementation of the development process (4) the urban result and the inclusion of different actors’ interests
The session will be organized as a round-table in which a panel of up to 4 scholars is invited to discuss for 5-10 minutes a theme or question posed by the convenors beforehand, followed by a discussion around the table as well as with other participants.
